“Always find a reason to laugh, it may not add years to your life, but will surely add life to your years.”

Well it is rightly said, “Laugh, while you still have teeth.” Laughter is defined as a visual expression of a number of positive emotional states, such as joy, mirth, happiness, relief. It is a bodily exercise precious to health. It helps us in building a positive mood and also leads the road to happiness. Laughter is considered to be a strong medicine with no side effects of course, for various diseases by increasing immune cells and infection-fighting antibodies, thus improving one’s resistance to disease.

It is said that practicing laughing as an exercise acts as a natural cure by increasing the pain tolerance and helps us to heal in a quick span of time. Health does not always improve by eating the right medicines; sometimes it is just the result of peace of mind, heart and the soul.

When we are happy from the inside, it improves our mood which automatically gets reflected in the various tasks we perform be it at work/ home or otherwise. It acts as a positive aspect for others around us as well, thus further contributing to a peaceful environment.

Practicing laughing as an exercise not only makes one happy but it also helps to remove the pain and stress from one’s well-being. This not only includes laughter exercises but also, watching comedy movies and standup comedy, reading books, listening to songs etc. This contributes in releasing the “feel good” hormones of our body such as endorphins; serotonin and dopamine in the bloodstream, making us feel uplifted and optimistic. It also increases the amount of oxygen flowing through our brain and body, which is great for our mental health. Laughter to one’s body is like a bee pollinating flowers and bringing them to life. Studies show that our response to stressful events can be altered by whether we view something as a threat or a challenge. Humor can give us a more lighthearted perspective and help us view events as challenges, thereby making them less threatening and more positive.

Sometimes, when we are in a happy mood, we tend to laugh on the silliest things, even when they might not be that funny. It is because of the impact created by the people we are surrounded with at that particular moment. What is more interesting is that, we don’t always need a joke to laugh on, even while being in a group. Sometimes, even the old boring conversations or the sound of people’s laughter can make us laugh.

In a research it was shown that women laugh 126 % more than men, but it is men who are found funnier. Women do not tend to show off their senses of humor while men like to present themselves as people with developed senses of humor.

Research also shows that children laugh about 400 times a day, but adults on average laugh only about 15 times. Especially in a healthcare environment plagued by burnout, they tend to become serious and have a stoic professional face.
