“Self -care is giving the world the best of you, instead what’s left of you.”
In today’s busy and struggling world, where everyone strives for achievement in various aspects of life, and wants to have a huge house, adequate bank balance, good relationship, a proper job with security and additional benefits; to be precise a perfect life with nothing to worry about, they want it all. We all aim for perfection in everything, take very calculative decisions at work and even in relationships. Hence, wanting all the right ingredients to be in place in the recipe of life, but at the same time, forgetting that a cook is required to turn those ingredients into a perfect recipe, which is only possible if the cook knows the recipe well and is physically and mentally healthy to cook that recipe.
This is in relevance with the various tasks an individual performs in his/ her life, but forgets that he/ she is required to perform self-care in order to continue with them, be it at work or at home, in the social circle or taking care of kids. But guess what? This is something that most of us neglect or tend to procrastinate, just because it is not mandatory like going work every day. We put in so much effort to create the best life for ourselves, but what is even the use of it if we can’t really enjoy it? We don’t think or plan in the same manner for hanging out with our friends, spending time with family, playing with our pets, doing activities that we love, and going out for movies, as we tend to do at our workplace, like keeping everything organized. Why? What seems to be so difficult about it?
It could be because as an employee in the organisation there’s always a boss right at the top of our head asking us to meet the deadlines, complete work in a proper way, which further creates anxiety and stress for us to complete it, obviously because you’re getting paid for it. But when it comes to self-care, you, yourself are the boss, the salary here would be the relaxation that you will achieve in the process of self-care.
It is necessary to take care of ourselves with the same earnestness with which we take care of our work life. We could prevent burnout from exposure to chronic stress, by just practicing self-care. Self-care helps to increase motivation, resilience and our ability to cope with stress. It also produces neuro-transmitters responsible for making us feel good. Without self-care we may experience burnout, compassion fatigue.
There are 8 main areas of self-care: physical, psychological, emotional, social, professional, environmental, spiritual, and financial. We can do the simplest tasks to perform self – care which will help us in staying healthy and energetic. The first step involved is eating the right food, in the right amount. To gain energy and to perform tasks at work and otherwise, it is crucial that we eat right which will help in providing our body with the essential nutrients.
Most of us neglect our health by not visiting the doctor for regular body check-ups especially during the period of late adulthood when it is extremely crucial, which might contribute to further complications. Thus, it is important to pay attention to seeking medical care whenever it is required. Maintaining proper hygiene at our home and our work place also contributes to self-care by motivating us to be in a clean environment.
It is also essential to take the required amount of sleep, so that we don’t feel lethargic while performing tasks during the day time. The right amount of sleep makes us fresh for the next day. One can also perform self-care by doing activities of his/ her interests such as singing, painting, dancing, going out for a walk, playing outdoor/ indoor games, binge watching etc.
So, Work on you, for you!
